The Mukamuka Munter is a classic Wellington trail race. Established 2007, and categorised as a "wilderness run" inspired by the Wellington Trampers' Marathon. The Mukamuka includes the rugged south coast, and isolated interior of the Remutaka Forest Park. The Mukamuka Munter is a staple on the calendar, with course records from Daniel Jones, back-to-back titles from Deborah Lynch and numerous veteran apperances by Pete McFarlane. The course requires respect for its polarising conditions, technical difficulty amongst very runnable track.
The Mukamuka Munter is full-on grassroots wilderness fixture through stunning coast and mountain landscape. The Mukamuka Munter is the inaugral race fixture of the the Wilderness Running and Endurance Collective Inc.
| Coast | Starting the Orongorongo River mouth following the Wild Coast Trail around Turikirae Head. Head east toward the Mukamuka-iti and Mukamuka Stream. Hard packed 4x4 trail becomes sandy trail and makes for fast running. |
| Valley | The Mukamuka is a broad river valley that becomes progressively more rugged and complex as it approaches the South Saddle. Technical river running is an important skill in this section, as is navigation. You will feel a world away from where you started or where you'll finish. |
| Bush | As you enter the Remutaka Forest park, untouched native bush You reach the South Saddle with sweeping views of the coast and Wellington region. You might not stick about long, it can be very windy! Drop down a steep rooted track to the Matthews Stream and then the major river crossing - The Orongorongo. |
| Catchpool | A fast run along the big bend track, you'll past walkers out for a picnic. You enter familiar territory on the Orongorongo River track to the finish. |
